A word of faith and hope
A word of faith and hope
Family, come sit with me. I want to talk about Easter—not just the fun stuff like egg hunts, but the incredible story of Jesus rising from the dead. It’s like the biggest promise God ever made, one that started way back in the Old Testament and came true in Jesus. Let’s look at how those ancient stories point to Easter and what it means for us.
First, let’s go back to the very beginning in Genesis 3:15. Right after Adam and Eve sinned, God promised that one of Eve’s descendants would “crush the serpent’s head.” That’s a picture of Jesus! John Calvin, a wise teacher from long ago, called this the “first gospel promise,” saying Jesus would defeat the enemy through His resurrection. When Jesus rose on Easter morning, He won that victory over sin and death, just as God said, so we can live free with Him.
Then there’s the Passover story in Exodus 12. Remember how the Israelites put the blood of a spotless lamb on their doors, and death passed over them? That lamb was a sign of Jesus, the “Lamb of God” (John 1:29), who saves us from sin’s slavery. Louis Berkhof, another great thinker, said the Passover lamb shows Jesus’ sacrifice, and His resurrection proves it worked. Charles Spurgeon once preached, “By his death, Jesus has destroyed death, and by his resurrection he has torn away the gates of the grave.” Easter celebrates how Jesus’ blood gives us eternal life!
n Isaiah 53, we read about a Suffering Servant who’d be “pierced for our transgressions” but then “prolong his days” (Isaiah 53:10). That’s Jesus, taking our punishment on the cross and rising again. Herman Bavinck wrote that this chapter shows Jesus’ death paid for our sins, and His resurrection seals our forgiveness. George Whitefield used to preach that Jesus’ rising proves He’s our Savior, fulfilling Isaiah’s words. Easter shows us Jesus is alive forever, inviting us to trust Him.
The Psalms give us a glimpse of Easter too. Psalm 16:10 says, “You will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay.” That’s Jesus! Cornelius Van Til taught that this verse shows God’s faithful promise, fully revealed when Jesus rose. A.W. Tozer said the resurrection is when God’s glory broke through, turning hope into reality. Easter is our celebration of God’s power over death!
So, my sons, Easter is God keeping His promises, woven through the Old Testament and shining bright in Jesus. As Wayne Grudem says, the resurrection proves Jesus is God’s Son and Scripture is true. From Genesis to the Psalms, and the whole new testament, it all points to Jesus’ victory on Easter, giving us new life. Let’s pray and thank God for His love, and this Easter, let’s live in the joy of what Jesus did for us.
